How Were Goose-Grip™ Products Born?

Auto Mechanics have been fixing automobiles for more than 100 years and being able to see what you are inspecting and taking apart has never been an easy task. Mechanic work lights have been around in all different configurations and shapes, but it all started with the droplight with a hook for hanging it and a metal cage around the hot bulb. And this was cool for a little while (definitely not literally) until cars started cramming more inside of engine bays.

Then, some company invented a long fluorescent fixture that would hang under the vehicle hood and it was corded for its power source. But that presented another set of issues. How do I get down below the other components to remove something like an alternator? Well, there goes the usefulness of that light because it only illuminates the top of the engine.

Then, some mechanics use a wearable headlight but of course, you need to have it attached with an elastic band around your head and many mechanics get a headache from the long term mild squeeze pressure of the elastic band and although it is truly a hands-free light source, you cannot place it inches away from the target and let's face it, you have to constantly aim your melon and that is not desirable for long jobs that take 4+ hours.


And let's not forget those hand-held flip lights with a button magnet on the bottom. The range of motion is limited and it cannot get close enough to what you need to see in most situations and of course you need to have ferrous metal to attach it at all and now there are fewer places on vehicles that are magnet friendly. It's all plastic and they break quickly for one reason or another and most have little or no recourse for warranty action.


And the last option is something that we have all done a few times when the opportunity presented itself, we imposed upon an actual person standing next to the car that was watching you while you fixed his or her car. You asked them to “hold the light for me please?” Or, you simply hold a light (a flashlight really) in one hand and work with the other…

So those are all of the choices for work lights. I don’t think I forgot anything. I have been fixing cars for 40+ years and I used all those lights during my career as a mechanic. But then there came a time when I became more easily agitated while working on these newer models and I needed to use something better, something state of the art. A work light that didn’t roll, or fall and would stay where I place it. I wanted a work light that was at least as good as a person standing next to the car holding a light for me. So, with that goal in mind, my company got to work on making a work light that would be “better than a person standing next to you holding the light for you”. And, after 2 + years of trials and errors, the Goose-Grip™ Mechanic’s Work light was created that fully solved the problems associated with a mechanic using lighting when working on cars. Being able to place a work light within inches of a target and take your hands off it and have this same light stay exactly where you put it is valuable. This did not exist with any light anywhere.
